Description:

The Naloxone Awareness and Response Training is part of Training Haven’s Community Access Series, available at no cost to organizations, agencies and individuals dedicated to saving lives.

This course equips direct care staff and caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to respond quickly and effectively to a suspected opioid overdose. Learners will understand the signs of overdose, how to administer Naloxone safely, and what steps to take until emergency help arrives. Through realistic examples and step-by-step demonstrations, participants will learn to act decisively in life-threatening situations.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to identify an opioid overdose, administer Naloxone confidently, and perform essential life-saving steps in accordance with safety standards from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).

Course Content

Lesson 1: Understanding Opioid Overdose

Lesson Content

Identify what opioids are and their common forms.
Describe how opioids affect the body and brain.
Recognize the physical and behavioral signs of an opioid overdose.
Identify and explain common risk factors that increase the likelihood of opioid overdose and apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Distinguish an opioid overdose from other medical emergencies.

Lesson 2: Understanding & Using Naloxone

Learners will be able to explain how Naloxone reverses an opioid overdose, identify the different forms of the medication (nasal spray), and describe and correctly sequence the steps for preparation, administration, and safe storage of Naloxone nasal spray. Emphasis is placed on confidence and accuracy during high-stress situations.  

Lesson 3: What To Do If You Think Someone Is Overdosing

Lesson Content

Learners will be able to apply a step-by-step response plan when an overdose is suspected, including assessing the situation, contacting emergency services, administering Naloxone, providing rescue breathing if needed, and remaining with the individual until help arrives. Participants will also understand the importance of calm communication and safety for everyone involved.
